Abinader congratulates his Guyanese counterpart for winning the elections

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican president, Luis Abinader, congratulated this Thursday his counterpart from Guyana, Irfaan Ali, for his re-election in the general elections of that South American country. “I congratulate my friend President Irfaan Ali on his victory in the Guyana elections,” said the Caribbean leader through his X account.

Abinader wished “much success” to Ali “in this new stage” and reaffirmed his “will to continue strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation” between the “peoples” of both countries. In Guyana, the general secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, assured this Thursday that they obtained “a landslide victory” in the general and regional elections held last Monday. The Guyana Elections Commission has not yet made the official announcement of the results, but the tally sheets from the different electoral districts are public. In a press conference, Jagdeo said that, according to the available data, the PPP/C obtained 46,513 more votes than the other five parties in the running combined. This gave him 55.32% of the total votes cast, 10.8% more than the other parties, so President Irfaan Ali will be re-elected for a second term. Dominican President Abinader has traveled to Guyana three times in the last two years, solidifying a strategic relationship with this South American nation, which has gained prominence in the region due to its rapid rise as an oil power.
