Abinader: “We will work for an accelerated transition to the new gang suppression force in Haiti”

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader highlighted that the Dominican Republic is proud of the diplomatic success achieved with the conversion of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti (MSS) into a “Gang Suppression Force”, composed of 5,500 troops. “The Dominican Republic is proud to have contributed to this effort and will continue working to promote peace and stability in the region,” he expressed in a message.

He celebrated that the United Nations Security Council “finally heard the claim that we have been making for some time, given the ineffectiveness of the current international mission to support the Haitian police, and approved a new resolution, creating another force, appropriately named, Gang Suppression Force.” “We will work towards an accelerated transition from the MSS to the new gang suppression force in Haiti and in that sense we will closely monitor said process,” he emphasized. Abinader highlighted that the Dominican Government, through its effective diplomacy and constant effort, played a key role in leading a group of allies committed to stability and security in Haiti and the region. “We also want to recognize the three former presidents, Leonel Fernández, Hipólito Mejía and Danilo Medina, who signed, together with the speaker, a letter addressed to the fifteen presidents of the countries that make up the United Nations Security Council,” Abinader said in a broadcast message. President Luis Abinader, during his speech before the eightieth General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, called on the member countries of the Security Council to promptly accept the resolution of the United States and Panama before the Security Council, to achieve the transformation of the MSS, whose mandate ends on October 2nd. He specified that the new force, approved today, will be directed and funded by United Nations experts, with a strong mandate to establish order and security in the neighboring country, under close political supervision. The logistics and operation will be carefully planned and executed to ensure effectiveness in the mission. He also highlighted the role he has played since 2021 in achieving this goal, working hand in hand with the international community to find effective solutions to the serious crisis in Haiti. Likewise, it views the action as a decisive step towards social, political, and economic stability, not only of Haiti, but of the entire region, and is committed to continue working to ensure the effective implementation of what has been agreed with its allies. The resolution also grants a broad and solid mandate to the force and places the logistical and operational aspects in the hands of United Nations experts, which will be financed from the UN budget, providing greater stability and effectiveness to the operation. “Finally, we thank all members of the Security Council for the adoption of this resolution and in particular the United States and Panama, countries that lead the issue of Haiti in that Council,” concluded the president.
