SANTO DOMINGO.– The Dominican Republic Army (ERD) reported that during the month of May, 11,261 Haitian citizens in an irregular migratory status were detained as a result of permanent surveillance and interdiction operations carried out in the border area and other points of the national territory.
According to a report from the institution, the actions were carried out in support of the migration policies implemented by the Dominican State.
The report also indicates that, during that same period, 192 vehicles of various types were seized, allegedly linked to illicit activities detected in operations carried out in various border provinces.
Likewise, the ERD reported that 45 people were detained and placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry for investigation purposes, due to their alleged connection with the trafficking of undocumented persons and other crimes.
Within the framework of anti-smuggling actions, the authorities also seized 143,400 units of foreign cigarettes that had been illegally introduced into the country, in addition to other illicit goods.

The Army assured that it will continue to strengthen control and surveillance devices along the border line and other strategic areas of the country, with the aim of preventing the illicit trafficking of migrants and reinforcing national security, in coordination with other State security agencies.
