Santo Domingo.— The National Social Security Council (CNSS) reported that it is evaluating a proposal to create a High-Cost Medication Fund (FOMAC), with the aim of facilitating access for Family Health Insurance (SFS) affiliates to high-cost treatments.
The initiative, presented by the Superintendence of Health and Occupational Risks (SISALRIL), initially includes 13 medications intended for the treatment of various types of cancer in adults and pediatric patients, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal muscular atrophy.

According to the proposal, the FOMAC would function as a specialized, capitalizable account subject to supervision within the Family Health Insurance.
Likewise, it proposes the joint purchase of medicines with the purpose of taking advantage of economies of scale, reducing costs, and improving the availability of these treatments for the patients who need them.

The general manager of the CNSS, Aura Celeste Fernández Rodríguez, explained that during a work meeting held this Monday, the main components of the proposal were analyzed, as well as the mechanisms that would allow for strengthening the care of the affiliates.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the coverage mechanisms of the Dominican Social Security System (SDSS) and offer a more effective response to people who require high-cost medications for the treatment of complex diseases.
The CNSS will continue to evaluate the technical, financial, and operational aspects of the proposal before adopting a final decision on the creation of the fund.
