San José.- The Ministry of Health of Costa Rica confirmed this Thursday two cases of monkeypox and activated epidemiological investigation protocols to apply measures to prevent the transmission of the disease.
The cases were detected in two men, aged 25 and 55, residing in the province of San José, authorities explained without providing further details.

The Ministry of Health announced that after confirming the cases, the corresponding epidemiological investigation began, as well as the monitoring of close contacts of the affected individuals and the implementation of the necessary measures to prevent the transmission of the disease.
“Mpox is a viral disease that is transmitted mainly through close physical contact with an infected person, including skin-to-skin contact, contact with skin lesions, body fluids, respiratory secretions during prolonged contact, or through contaminated personal items,” the Ministry of Health detailed.

The authorities recommended that the population maintain proper hygiene, frequent hand washing, avoid close physical contact, including sexual contact, with people who have lesions compatible with the disease or who have a confirmed diagnosis, in addition to not sharing personal items, such as towels, bedding, or utensils, with sick people.
The most characteristic symptom of monkeypox is the appearance of skin lesions similar to pimples or blisters, which can occur anywhere on the body, although they are more frequent in the genital and perianal regions, the mouth, the face, the hands, and the feet.
These lesions may be accompanied by fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and general malaise, the official information details.
