Santiago.- The former Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Domínguez Brito, stated that the Government has abandoned the Dominican penitentiary system and questioned the current authorities’ ability to promote a true judicial reform and confront criminality in the country.
During his statements, the former official maintained that in recent years there have been no significant advances in penitentiary matters, beyond some repairs to existing infrastructure, which, in his view, evidences the lack of a comprehensive strategy for the rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty.
Domínguez Brito pointed out that the Dominican Republic needs the construction of new penitentiary centers and the implementation of policies aimed at the social reintegration of inmates, with the purpose of reducing criminal recidivism and strengthening citizen security.
“These have been lost years. Policy regarding criminality and the prison system must promote the internal restructuring of the individual so that they do not reoffend. However, that model has been totally abandoned during these years,” he/she expressed.
The former attorney general considered that the initiatives promoted by the Government have been insufficient in the face of growing challenges in terms of security and justice, and asserted that the penitentiary system continues to face structural problems that limit its rehabilitation capacity.

Likewise, he criticized President Luis Abinader, stating that the current administration lacks a clear vision regarding judicial reform and the necessary actions to effectively confront criminality.
Domínguez Brito’s statements come amid the national debate on the modernization of the justice system, citizen security, and the conditions of the country’s penitentiary centers.
