The meeting seeks to socialize techniques to better organize workers and defend their labor rights
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic hosted this Wednesday the UNI Américas Regional Organizing and Strategy Forum, a regional meeting that brings together representatives of the trade union movement from different countries to exchange experiences, strengthen worker organization, and analyze the challenges of the labor sector in the region.
Marvin Largaespada, regional director of UNI Americas Property Services, explained that the session is part of a training process aimed at strengthening the organizational capacities of trade union organizations.
“We are at a training event. We are a global union representing thirteen different sectors of the economy, and we are carrying out a series of activities in Santo Domingo with young people, women, and representatives from some of the sectors we group together. This is an organizing forum where we learn techniques to better organize workers and defend their labor rights, their trade union rights, occupational health and safety, gender issues, and to strengthen union representation,” he/she expressed.

He added that UNI represents more than 10 million members worldwide and has a presence on four continents.
Largaespada indicated that, in addition to the training sessions, the meeting includes statutory meetings and spaces for discussion on the future of the international trade union movement.

He specified that in the Dominican Republic, organizations from the telecommunications, commerce, call center, care, and health sectors, which are part of UNI Américas, are participating.
Regional trade union forum
For his part, Reynaldo Colporán, representative of Fedotrazonas and UNI Américas, highlighted that the regional event is held each year in a different country and that, on this occasion, the Dominican Republic was chosen as the host.
He explained that one of the main objectives of the meeting is to exchange experiences regarding labor advancements recorded in different countries and to learn about initiatives that can be implemented in Dominican territory.

“It is a type of training that allows us to learn about the positive things that are happening in some countries and to analyze how some of those experiences can be applied here in the Dominican Republic,” he noted.
Likewise, he highlighted the importance of union organization to maintain the balance between the different actors in the labor field.
He indicated that, in the context of the discussion on the Labor Code reform, the participation of workers through tripartite dialogue has allowed for the preservation of acquired rights and the promotion of better conditions regarding social security and labor protection.
Colporán reported that among the participating Dominican organizations are Fedotrazonas, UNASED, composed of representatives from the nursing sector affiliated with the CNTD, and FENAMUTRA, an organization that brings together working women, all affiliated with UNI Américas.
