Santo Domingo.— The vehicle fleet of the Dominican Republic closed 2025 with significant growth and greater participation of women as vehicle owners, according to data from the 2025 Vehicle Fleet report prepared by the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII).
According to the document, at the end of 2025 the Dominican vehicle fleet reached 6,640,871 units, an increase of 446,819 vehicles compared to the previous year. Of the total registered, 70.7% corresponds to individuals, while 29.3% is in the name of legal entities.

Among owners who are individuals, men maintain the largest share, at 76.1%, while women account for 23.9%. This means that approximately 1.1 million vehicles are registered in the names of Dominican women, a figure that reflects the growth of their participation in the automotive sector.
Women increase their participation faster
One of the highlights of the DGII report is that the growth in vehicle ownership among women was higher than that recorded among men.

During 2025, the number of vehicles registered to women increased by 6% compared to 2024, while among men the growth was 3.8%. This difference highlights a more accelerated expansion of female participation within the national vehicle fleet.
Behavior also allows for observing changes in mobility preferences and vehicle acquisition between both groups of owners.
Nationwide, motorcycles account for 57.9% of the vehicle fleet, followed by cars, with 17.9%, and jeeps, with 12%.

Among female owners, motorcycles account for 41.3% of the vehicles registered in their name. Automobiles take second place, with 28.8%, while jeeps reach 23.7%.
In the case of men, motorcycles have an even higher participation, at 55%, followed by cars, at 20.4%, and jeeps, at 12.4%.
Hato Mayor leads female participation
The territorial distribution also shows significant differences within the Dominican vehicle fleet.
According to the DGII, Hato Mayor leads the provinces with the highest proportion of vehicles owned by women within the individual segment, at 29%.
Followed by La Altagracia, with 28.5%; Peravia, with 28.1%; Samaná, with 27.9%, and San Pedro de Macorís, with 27.8%.
At the opposite end, the provinces where men concentrate a higher proportion of vehicles owned by individuals are Azua, with 81.5%; San Cristóbal, with 81%; San José de Ocoa, with 80.6%; Elías Piña, with 79.2%, and Barahona and Valverde, both with 78.8%.

These territorial differences allow us to observe that the composition of the vehicle fleet is not uniform throughout the country and that there are significant variations depending on the province.
Most vehicles are over five years old
Another aspect highlighted by the report is the age of the units circulating in the Dominican Republic.
83.7% of the vehicle fleet consists of vehicles more than five years old, while 16.3% is made up of units manufactured between 2021 and 2026.
Regarding the origin of vehicles, excluding motorcycles, Japanese-made models dominate the Dominican market, with a 59.8% share. South Korea ranks second, with 15%, followed by the United States, with 11.5%.
Vehicles also generate tax revenue
The growth of the vehicle fleet also has a direct impact on State tax revenues.
During 2025, taxes related to vehicle ownership and registration reached RD$29,905.8 million, equivalent to approximately US$510 million.
According to the report, the issuance of the first license plate represented the main source of income within the taxes linked to the automotive sector.
DGII data thus show not only the growth in the number of vehicles registered in the country, but also the changes in the composition of owners and preferences by gender.
The increase in female participation, especially with a 6% year-on-year growth, constitutes one of the most relevant elements of the behavior recorded in the 2025 vehicle fleet.
With more than 6.6 million registered units, the Dominican vehicle fleet continues to expand, while the figures reflect new trends in vehicle ownership, territorial differences, and a growing participation of women as vehicle owners.
