Episcopate warns about currents seeking to normalize behaviors contrary to social values

In the framework of the 182nd anniversary of National Independence, the Dominican Episcopal Conference (CED) published its message entitled “Dominican Republic: a people sustained in hope. The ethics of duty”, in which it urges society to renew its commitment to ethical values, protect the fundamental structure of the family and participate responsibly in public life. The Episcopate warned about ideological currents that, according to what was stated, seek to normalize behaviors contrary to natural law, which, they claim, promotes incivility and weakens social coexistence. In that sense, the prelates urged to watch over the protection of families, confront these currents and strengthen mental health services for those who need them.

Regarding the proposed reform of Law 136-03, which establishes the Code for the Protection of the Rights of Children and Adolescents, the Church reiterated the need to safeguard the family unit, warning that any attack against it represents a threat to the hope and stability of society. Likewise, the document calls for respecting the laws and strengthening the rule of law, noting that the violation of norms and disrespect for authority weaken peaceful coexistence. It also proposes to promote basic civic education that fosters legal awareness, civic responsibility, and a culture of legality. In the educational field, the bishops emphasized the importance of ensuring a comprehensive education based on ethical and moral values, urging the authorities and entities linked to the education system to ensure content that promotes these principles. They also highlighted the testimony of life as a fundamental pedagogical tool. The message addresses social issues such as micro-trafficking of drugs, child abuse, teenage pregnancy, violence, infant mortality, insecurity, dehumanization in the practice of medicine, and the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources.

Faced with this situation, the bishops invited the population to “pilgrimage with hope” and work together to transform these realities. They also warned about cultural and technological risks that can affect human dignity, emphasizing that technology must be at the service of the common good and authentic relationships.

Finally, the Episcopate encouraged Dominicans to assume an active and conscious participation in public life, inspired by social justice and the defense of the most vulnerable, affirming that the nation is called to build a dignified future sustained by faith, truth, and charity.
