Santiago. – The Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, urged the countries of the region to consolidate a profound transformation of police institutions, based on transparency, closeness to communities, and respect for human rights.
The statement was offered during the closing ceremony of the Eighth Meeting of Ministers on Public Security in the Americas (MISPA VIII), held in Santiago, with the presence of the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, and the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin.
Raful highlighted that the event results in a clear and agreed-upon roadmap to move towards a more effective, humane, and sustainable citizen security on the continent.
“Nos vamos de Santiago con una responsabilidad histórica: demostrar que nuestras instituciones policiales pueden ser agentes de cambio social legítimos, eficaces y democráticos”,
expresó la ministra.
He added that the true success of these initiatives will not be measured by speeches, but by the real transformations in the communities, in daily life and in the citizens’ perception of security.
In that context, it was announced that the Dominican Republic was acclaimed to chair two important technical instances of the OAS:
The Subsidiary Technical Team for Police Management
The Technical Team on Emergency and Security Services
This designation reinforces the country’s leadership in the field of regional public safety.
The OAS Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, congratulated the Dominican Republic for its proactive and committed role, and presented Raful with a work of art featuring the flags of the countries of the hemisphere as a token of recognition.
Ramdin underscored the common security challenges facing the region and urged member states to responsibly implement the commitments made in the Declaration of Santiago de los Caballeros, an official document summarizing the agreements reached in this edition of MISPA.
