What appeared to be a normal fitness routine ended in severe kidney failure for a man in Moscow who consumed protein supplements every day and trained several times a week.
Doctors at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine, Moscow’s main emergency medical center, treated the patient after he developed high blood pressure and headaches. Tests also detected protein in his urine, a sign of kidney damage, according to the institution.
His condition deteriorated rapidly, requiring hemodialysis before he underwent a kidney transplant. The operation was successful, and he is now recovering. The institute said that if he strictly follows medical recommendations, he may be able to gradually return to physical activity in the coming months.
The medical center warned that early changes can often go unnoticed because they may not cause swelling or other visible symptoms. It recommended that people following high-protein diets stay properly hydrated and periodically monitor their urine and blood chemistry.
