SANTO DOMINGO, RD.– During a short edition of La Semanal, President Luis Abinader referred to the blackout that occurred this Sunday at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA) and assured that his government will investigate the causes of the incident.
The president explained that the Minister of Public Works and president of the Airport Commission, Eduardo Estrella, has convened the council of the Airport Department to analyze in detail what happened and determine if there was any type of negligence.
“Situations like that, for our Government, are totally unacceptable and we are following up on it. If there was negligence in that case, there will also be consequences,” Abinader warned.
Estrella summoned the members of the organization for this Tuesday to learn in detail the report prepared by the technicians of the Airport Department on the electrical failure, with the aim of determining the level of responsibility of the concessionaire Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom).
Aerodom, responsible for the administration of AILA until the year 2060 after the extension of its contract in 2023, will be evaluated to verify if the necessary protocols and contingency plans were followed.
The electrical failure recorded at the AILA lasted for almost nine hours last Sunday, which caused delays and cancellations of flights, in addition to generating discomfort among the users of the terminal. Hours later, in the early hours of Monday, a second interruption of service occurred, which Aerodom attributed to a scheduled outage to replace a generator.
