“We must be honest with the population and not sell dreams. But the good thing is that the Code does not expire and that the President of the Republic has the power to convene an extraordinary legislature to continue the work”, he expressed.
The legislator valued many of the contributions made by the Attorney General’s Office as substantial, although he warned about sensitive aspects that would be eliminated from the project, such as articles that guarantee fundamental rights to citizens. Among them, he cited the suppression of the right to a phone call after an arrest, as well as the elimination of Article 290 and others that contemplated freedoms such as freedom of worship, expression, transit, and work. “It is not true that the Dominican Republic will become a police state. We are a democratic, social, and law-abiding state, and those constitutional achievements must remain in force in the Code,” he emphasized. Finally, the deputy clarified that, although there is no time to approve the Code in this legislature, he is confident that an extraordinary session will be convened to conclude its review.
