Low turnout in supermarkets ahead of Storm Melissa
Santo Domingo. – Since the early hours of the afternoon, several supermarkets in Greater Santo Domingo reported a low influx of people due to the meteorological forecasts associated with Tropical Storm Melissa, which is moving southwest of the Caribbean Sea and has left heavy rains and gusts of wind on the country’s coastal area.
Citizens report that long lines and empty shelves were recorded in the morning, which ceased in the afternoon.
Several people consulted by De Último Minuto indicated that they were looking to stock up on evaporated milk, chocolate bars, meats and flour derivatives, as well as non-perishable foods, candles, and cleaning products.
“People are no longer like before, when they crowded the supermarkets buying everything. In the early morning there were people, but after midday there is almost no one on the street or in the shops,” said William Vargas.
Meanwhile, some supermarkets have changed their service hours due to the large accumulations of rain that will hit the country in the coming hours, according to emergency agencies.
