The President of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos, reaffirmed this Monday his commitment to the construction of a consensual Labor Code and with the necessary improvements, after holding meetings with representatives of the business sector interested in the revision of some discrepant points in the legislative proposal.

“I have always said that in everything man does there is room for improvement,” De los Santos expressed when referring to the project review process.

In a meeting in his office, along with the senator from La Altagracia, Rafael Duluc, who led the Special Commission that studied the modifications to Law 16-92 that approves the Labor Code of the Dominican Republic, and the senator for Samaná, Pedro Catrain, he stated that what is precisely sought is a Code as consensual as possible, and that in the end the parties will agree.

Regarding the business sector, he said they are in a positive attitude and willing to have some issues of the Labor Code, approved in first discussion in the legislative body, reviewed.

“We have the space to make any modification that allows for a broader discussion,” the legislator pointed out.

From his side, Senator Rafael Barón Duluc explained that this is a democratic, valid, and constitutional process, so entrepreneurs, like the working sector or any institution, have the right to present proposals before approving an initiative in second reading.

Ricardo de los Santos announced that they will also meet with representatives of the labor sector, with the purpose of listening to their proposals and moving towards a consensus that responds to the expectations of Dominican society.

“The goal is to achieve a Labor Code that reflects the balance between the acquired rights of workers and the needs for modernization of the legal framework,” he pointed out.

He also clarified that the labor rights already recognized are not under discussion, although there are several issues that can be improved.

The Senate President asked the media and citizens for patience, indicating that differences still need to be resolved between the parties involved, as there are points of disagreement between the employers’ sector and the labor sector regarding the Labor Code.
