Santo Domingo.– The entry into force this Monday of the new Penal Code generated diverse reactions among citizens consulted, who expressed expectations regarding the impact that the new legislation could have on the fight against crime and the strengthening of the justice system.
Freddy, one of the interviewees, described the implementation of the new regulations as positive and stated that it represents progress for the country. In his view, criminals will have to think twice before committing a crime due to the toughening of penalties.
Furthermore, he expressed his support for President Luis Abinader for the enactment of the legislation and considered that the public has welcomed this change.
For his part, Juan Miguel Malena opined that, although some criminals will reflect before acting, others will continue to commit crimes. However, he understands that the new Penal Code could contribute to reducing crime. “Perhaps crime will subside a little,” he expressed.
Meanwhile, the citizen identified as Nulfo showed a more cautious stance. He considered that crime could persist despite the entry into force of the new law and admitted that he does not yet know the content of the Penal Code in detail, so he preferred not to issue a broader assessment. However, he acknowledged that it was necessary to update the penal legislation, due to the age of the previous code.

Opinions reflect diverse expectations among the population regarding the effects the new regulation will have, the application of which begins this August 3rd after replacing the Penal Code that had been in force for more than 140 years.
With the implementation of the regulations, judges, prosecutors, and other justice system operators must apply the new provisions in the corresponding proceedings, following the conclusion of the one-year vacatio legis period established for institutions to adapt their procedures to the new legislation.
