New York to register temporary workers for snow removal jobs

New York City will hold a registration event for temporary workers who could be called to clear snow and ice after winter storms. The event will take place Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Queens, with pay starting at $30 per hour.
The registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at PS 040 Samuel Huntington, located at 109-20 Union Hall Street in Queens. Applicants can reserve an appointment through the New York City Department of Sanitation’s registration portal. Those who arrive without an appointment are not guaranteed service.
Registering does not mean workers will immediately begin working or receive regular shifts. The Department of Sanitation hires temporary workers on a daily basis when additional help is needed following significant snowfall.
Workers may be assigned to clear snow and ice from bus stops, pedestrian crossings, fire hydrants and stairways throughout the city. The hourly rate increases to $45 for hours worked beyond the first 40 hours in a week.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the United States and physically able to perform demanding work in difficult winter conditions.
Those registering must provide a valid phone number and email address, bring their Social Security card and submit completed W-4 and IT-2014 tax forms. They must also complete Form I-9 and provide the original, valid identification documents required to verify employment authorization.
The DSNY is expected to send registration confirmation by email about three weeks after the event. Anyone who does not receive confirmation can check their registration status by contacting the department after October 31.
People who complete registration by November 30, 2026, will be eligible for a paid four-hour orientation in December and expedited processing for their paycheck, which is expected within two weeks after completing work.
When workers are called, shift notifications will be sent by phone or email. They must bring proof of registration and their own weather-resistant clothing suitable for extreme winter conditions.
Another registration event is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Susan E. Wagner High School on Staten Island. The city may announce additional dates as needed.
