Protests and encampments over Spain’s housing crisis continued Saturday, with around 70,000 people taking part in a demonstration in Madrid and more than 50 other protests held in cities across the country.

The Madrid demonstration was led by a banner calling for a general strike, while incidents were reported during a separate protest in Valencia. The mobilizations were organized by the Tenants’ Union amid growing concern over access to housing.

The protests came a day after Spain’s Congress rejected decrees containing measures to address the housing crisis. They also took place as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez considers whether to call early elections ahead of the scheduled 2027 vote.

Thousands of demonstrators filled Madrid’s Cibeles Square early Saturday afternoon, where four groups taking part in the march converged. The regional government delegation estimated that around 70,000 people attended.
