Judge suspends demolition of the historic house where Marilyn Monroe died

Los Angeles, California. – The house where the legendary actress Marilyn Monroe spent her last months of life will remain standing. A judge of the Supreme Court of Los Angeles decided last Tuesday, September 2, to block its demolition, supporting the resolution of the City Council that declared the property as a Historical-Cultural Monument. Monroe died on the 4th of August 1962 in this residence located in Brentwood, a single-story house with 2,600 square feet, which over time became a symbol of her life and legacy.

Over the years, the property has been at the center of legal disputes, especially since the current owner, Brinah Milstein Bank, acquired the house in 2023 for 8.35 million dollars.

The heiress sought to demolish the property to develop new projects, but her request was met with the City Council’s refusal, which last year unanimously approved its inclusion in the list of Historical-Cultural Monuments. The organization Los Angeles Conservancy then celebrated the decision and thanked the support of councilwoman Traci Park and her team. With this new court ruling, Milstein will not be able to proceed with the demolition and it is unknown if he will choose to sell the property. Thus, Marilyn Monroe’s last house, the setting for one of the most remembered chapters in Hollywood history, will be preserved as part of the cultural heritage of Los Angeles.
