SANTO DOMINGO.– The renowned Dominican trumpeter Jullys Núñez, a fundamental figure in the formation of Eddy Herrera’s first orchestra, passed away after a battle with cancer, as reported this Sunday by the merengue singer himself through his social media.
Eddy Herrera, visibly moved, shared an emotional message in which he remembered Núñez as one of his great friends and as the man with whom, in January 1990, he began to structure his first musical group after separating from Wilfrido Vargas.
“Jullys was the person who helped me organize my orchestra from day one. He was also its director. More than a musician, he was a brother,” the artist wrote on his Instagram account.
A legacy that goes beyond the stage
Herrera also highlighted Jullys’ personal virtues, whom he described as an exceptional human being. “He was quite a gentleman, disciplined, talented, noble, always cheerful, always in harmony. We used to call each other ‘vieeejo’. My old friend, why did you leave me! May God have you in glory. I still don’t believe it,” he expressed with deep sadness.
Núñez’s legacy transcends the musical: he was an essential part of the sound identity of Herrera’s solo project, participating not only as a trumpet player, but also in the arrangements and direction of the orchestra in its early years.
