Jerusalem.- The Islamist group Hamas announced this Friday that a delegation of its top leadership will travel to Cairo (Egypt) to participate in a new round of negotiations on the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which will begin this Saturday and will last for several days.
According to the Hamas statement, the delegation led by Khalil Al-Hayya will meet with Egyptian officials and mediators “with the aim of completing the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, stopping the repeated Zionist attacks on the Gaza Strip, and finding the appropriate mechanisms to enter the second phase of the agreement.”
Furthermore, Hamas indicated that its representatives will hold meetings with other “Palestinian factions and forces” to try to reach a consensus and coordinate “the response to the challenges facing the Palestinian population.”

The United States formally declared in January the entry into force of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, which was to include the demilitarization of Hamas, the creation of an international stabilization force, and the entry of a Palestinian technocratic committee to govern the Strip.

However, Hamas maintains its rejection of disarmament as long as the terms of the first phase of the agreement, which include the Israeli withdrawal from the enclave, are not met.
For now, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue with mediation from Egypt and Qatar without progress on the second phase of the agreement, in a scenario marked by the conflict with Iran and regional tensions, which have reduced diplomatic pressure on the peace process.
