At least fourteen deaths leave a confrontation in a prison in southern Ecuador

At least 12 people were killed early this Monday at the Machala prison in Ecuador. The events unfolded around 2:00 a.m., when a group of inmates managed to get out of their cells. The inmates, identified as members of the criminal organization Los Lobos Box, murdered a prison guide, injured two police officers and kidnapped six other agents.

Then they moved to another pavilion, where members of the rival gang Los Lobos are held. Once there, the gang members executed more than a dozen prisoners and injured a similar number. During the attacks, three explosive devices were detonated and a group of inmates escaped, although the National Police reported that they had managed to recapture 13 of them, according to reports from Ecuavisa. Following the altercations, around 200 agents, including police and military, are guarding the prison complex during the morning of this Monday.
