At least seven people have died and 237 have been rescued after a catamaran ferry carrying 267 people sank Sunday off the northern coast of Cyprus, near Kyrenia.
Authorities said the vessel was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when it began taking on water for reasons that remain unknown. The captain issued a distress call before the ferry overturned about two kilometers from the coast, shortly after departing Kyrenia for Taşucu, Türkiye.
Search and rescue operations remain underway, with Turkish and Turkish Cypriot coast guard vessels, military ships, helicopters, divers, police, ambulances and civilian boats involved in the operation. Authorities have urged the public to rely only on official information as efforts continue to locate the 23 people still missing.
