Following the life sentence imposed on Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a new warning, saying its efforts will extend beyond drug traffickers to include corrupt public officials.
DEA Administrator Terry Cole said the agency will pursue “every corrupt government official” who supports or enables criminal organizations.
“This is just the beginning,” Cole said, signaling that U.S. authorities intend to expand their crackdown on corruption linked to organized crime.
The remarks came shortly after Zambada, one of the founders and longtime leaders of the Sinaloa cartel, received a life sentence in the United States.
