A Dominican barber from Brooklyn was shot and killed early Thursday after allegedly resisting an attempted robbery outside a strip club in Queens. New York City police are searching for a masked and hooded gunman who remains unidentified.
Hector Figuereo, 49, was outside the Riviera Gentleman’s Club near Steinway Street and 35th Avenue in Astoria around 3:50 a.m. when the alleged attacker approached him from behind and demanded a Miami Cuban-link bracelet, according to authorities. Figuereo, who lived in Sunset Park, was shot in the back and taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Figuereo’s childhood friend Edwin Cabrera told the Daily News that the barber was at the club celebrating a mutual friend’s birthday, just three days before his own birthday. Cabrera said Figuereo lived with and cared for his mother after his father died of cancer several years ago.
Friends and customers gathered at Figuereo’s Sunset Park barbershop Thursday night to remember him and held a candlelight vigil in his honor.
