A Dominican man is facing charges after a 27-year-old Bronx woman died following an anti-aging treatment at a wellness center in New York, with authorities now determining that she died from a cardiac air embolism caused by air entering an intravenous line.
The victim, Elizabeth Baron, died after receiving an injection of NAD+ at Bereshit Lifestyle Center in Riverdale. The treatment was administered by Luis Rojas Cabrera, 55, a Dominican man who allegedly operated the wellness center but was not licensed to practice medicine in the United States. The New York City medical examiner ruled Baron’s death a homicide.
According to the report, Baron went into cardiac arrest immediately after the injection. Court documents allege that Rojas Cabrera later told a police officer, “I made a very big mistake.” Prosecutors initially charged him with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession while authorities awaited the medical examiner’s findings.
The case now centers on the medical examiner’s determination that air entered Baron’s IV, causing the fatal embolism. Rojas Cabrera allegedly administered NAD+, a substance promoted in some wellness circles for its purported anti-aging effects.
