Bangkok, Thailand.– Eight Buddhist monks died this Thursday after being struck by a pickup truck while participating in a pilgrimage in the province of Mukdahan, in northeastern Thailand, local authorities reported.
The accident occurred around 11:00 a.m. (local time), when a group of 34 monks was walking along a road in that province, located on the border with Cambodia.

According to the governor of Mukdahan, Worayan Boonnarach, a pickup truck driven by a minor collided with several of the religious figures, causing the death of eight of them at the scene.
The authorities launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident and determine the corresponding responsibilities.
The tragic event has caused shock in Thailand, where Buddhism is the majority religion and pilgrimages are part of the traditional practices of numerous monks and faithful.
