Fans clash with police during Argentina's World Cup tribute at the Obelisk

Thousands of Argentinians gathered around the Obelisk in downtown Buenos Aires on Sunday to honor the national team despite its 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final.

The celebration later turned tense as clashes broke out between some fans and Buenos Aires City Police, who used a water cannon truck to disperse the crowd.

According to the city’s security authorities, the unrest began when a group of people threw bottles at police officers. Others breached the security fence surrounding the Obelisk.

At least 12 people were arrested, according to the security team.

Before the violence erupted, thousands of supporters filled the area wearing Argentina’s sky blue and white colors, singing, dancing and celebrating the team’s World Cup campaign as fireworks lit up the night sky.
