New York.- A young girl swept away by a strong current lost her life while enjoying a beach day with her family in The Hamptons, on Long Island. Suffolk County authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident that occurred this past July 4th.
The victim, identified as Kiara Paolasin, 6 years old and a resident of Brooklyn, entered the water Friday morning in the Sebonac Creek area, in Southampton. According to initial reports, the child had attempted to retrieve a shoe that was floating when she lost her balance and was swept away by the current into Great Peconic Bay.

A 16-year-old relative tried to rescue her, but could not reach her due to the force of the water. Subsequently, a kayaker who was in the area came to her aid and managed to pull her out of the water, although she was already unconscious.
Emergency teams performed resuscitation maneuvers on her before transporting her to a hospital in Southampton, where she was pronounced dead.

The Southampton Police Detective Division is keeping the investigation open to establish precisely how the incident occurred. Likewise, the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will officially determine the cause of death.
The tragedy occurred during the U.S. Independence Day weekend, when thousands of people flocked to Long Island beaches amidst an intense heat wave. Authorities reiterated the call to exercise extreme caution when entering the sea, especially in areas with strong currents that can pose a serious danger, even for experienced swimmers.
