Civil rights organizations, including the ACLU, have asked a federal court in New Hampshire to clarify the scope of the Supreme Court’s ruling on birthright citizenship following a new executive order issued by President Donald Trump.
The groups argue that Trump’s latest order attempts to circumvent the Supreme Court’s previous decision, which they say confirmed that an executive order cannot change the Constitution’s protections for birthright citizenship.
The motion was filed by the ACLU, ACLU of New Hampshire, ACLU of Maine, ACLU of Massachusetts, the Legal Defense Fund, the Asian Law Caucus and Democracy Defenders Fund. The organizations are seeking court action to ensure the scope of the Supreme Court’s June 30 decision is upheld.
