The United Nations reported that a gang attack that left at least 47 people dead and more than 50 people kidnapped is one of the largest mass kidnappings in Haiti in recent years. One of the armed gang leaders has threatened to kill the hostages if authorities kill any gang members while attempting to secure the community, which is located in the hills above Port-au-Prince.
According to reports from the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), at least 1,408 people were killed and another 656 were injured in Haiti during the second quarter of 2026.
The violence was particularly concentrated in the Cul-de-Sac Plain and several neighborhoods of Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince, where clashes between gangs over territorial control and illicit sources of income left 463 people dead and 256 injured. At least 176 cases of rape were also documented in those areas.
More than 18,000 people were displaced, while essential services such as healthcare and education were suspended.
