The Islamist organization Hamas asserted this Tuesday that the group has not been an obstacle to achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and held Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for blocking mediation efforts, in response to the speech by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, at the UN General Assembly, who accused the organization of rejecting truce offers.
“We have never been an obstacle to achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza; we have shown all the flexibility and positivity required for this purpose,” Hamas assured in a statement released on its Telegram channel.
“The US administration, mediators, and the entire world know that warmonger Netanyahu is the only one blocking all attempts to reach an agreement,” the statement specifies.
The Hamas reaction comes hours after Trump accused the Islamist group at the UN of refusing to “release the hostages or accept a ceasefire” and assured that they have “repeatedly rejected reasonable offers to make peace”.
“This could have been resolved so long ago, but instead of giving in to Hamas’s ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with a single message: release the hostages now. Just release the hostages now,” Trump said from the podium of the UN General Assembly in New York.
On Monday, Hamas asked Trump to guarantee a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of half of the hostages held captive in the Gaza Strip, as reported by Fox News and confirmed to EFE by a source from the Palestinian movement.
The proposal was formalized in a letter that Hamas delivered to Egypt and Qatar, the mediators, to pass it on to the US president.
Despite Trump accusing Hamas of refusing to accept a truce, the truth is that most times an agreement has been reached in this regard, it has been violated by Israel.

The last pact was accepted by Hamas on August 18th. At that time, 10 Israeli hostages were released in exchange for the massive entry of aid to the enclave to alleviate the serious humanitarian crisis facing the Gazan population caused by the famine that Israel is causing with the blockade.
Instead, Tel Aviv ignored the proposal and continued with its plans to take the city of Gaza.
