Rome. The Italian Ministry of the Interior announced this Friday the temporary reintroduction of controls at ports and airports for travelers arriving from Spain, in response to the migration crisis recorded in the autonomous city of Ceuta following the massive arrival of people from Morocco. The measure involves the temporary application of border controls permitted by the Schengen area in exceptional circumstances.
The decision was adopted following a meeting of the Committee for Analysis on Immigration and Border Security, led by the Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, who evaluated the evolution of the situation at Spain’s southern border. Furthermore, the official held a telephone conversation with the French Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, with whom he agreed to reinforce controls at the land border between both countries within the framework of existing police cooperation.

The announcement came after Spain’s Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, reported that approximately 48,300 of the nearly 50,000 people who entered Ceuta irregularly had already returned to Morocco, amidst efforts to control the migration emergency.
Italy had previously resorted to the temporary reintroduction of border controls, as it did on its border with Slovenia to contain the migratory flow along the Balkan route. The new decision is framed within the provisions of the Schengen Borders Code, which allows member states to exceptionally reintroduce internal controls when they consider that there is a threat to public order or security.
