Joseph Czuba, who stabbed a 6-year-old Palestinian boy, dies in prison

New York. – Joseph Czuba, the 73-year-old man sentenced to 53 years in prison for the murder of Palestinian child Wadee Alfayoumi, six years old, died in custody on July 24, according to US media without revealing the cause of his death. Czuba was found guilty in May of this year for a crime that shocked the United States and was described as an act of racial and religious hatred. On October 14, 2023, Czuba broke into the home he rented to the Alfayoumi family in a Chicago suburb and stabbed the child 26 times, causing his death. He also attacked the child’s mother, who was seriously injured but managed to survive after taking refuge in the bathroom. The investigation determined that the attack was motivated by hatred towards Muslims and occurred in a context of international tension following Hamas’ attacks on Israel, which had increased cases of Islamophobia in the U.S.

According to the mother’s testimony, Czuba had begun harassing them days before the attack, demanding that they leave the house with expressions like “Muslims are not welcome.” The relationship between landlord and tenants, which until then had been cordial, drastically transformed in a matter of days. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that the crime was premeditated and motivated by religious prejudice. The knife with which the minor was murdered was still found embedded in his body when the authorities arrived.

Czuba’s death closes a court case, but leaves deep wounds open in a community that still mourns the loss of an innocent child victim of hate. Wadee Alfayoumi became a symbol of the fight against Islamophobia in the United States.
