Tunis.- Twenty-five people died and 44 were injured in a bus accident recorded this Friday in northeastern Algeria, reported the General Directorate of Civil Protection, which warned that the figures “could vary as the hours pass.”
The accident occurred on a local road in the town of Boumerdés (east), about 45 kilometers from the capital, when a “large” passenger bus overturned and plunged down a slope, rolling several times until the vehicle came to a stop.

Civil Protection authorities indicated, through their Facebook account, that “the number of fatalities is expected to increase, due to the number of serious cases among the rescued injured.”
After concluding the recovery of the bodies of the deceased and the evacuation of the injured, the government of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune conveyed its condolences to the families and assured that an “exhaustive and in-depth investigation will be carried out to reveal the causes of the accident.”

In addition, Tebboune declared three days of official mourning starting today, during which national flags will fly at half-mast at government institutions and headquarters, as well as at public companies.
Almost eight hours after the incident—which occurred after 9:00 local time (8:00 GMT)—the identification of some bodies continues, while others have already been handed over to their families and transported to their places of origin.
Although bus accidents in Algeria are frequent, this is the largest one in the last year, followed by another recorded in August 2025, in which 18 people died.
The government of the Maghreb country launched a project last September to renew its buses, acknowledging that the vast majority were over 30 years old, which “significantly increases” the risk of accidents due to mechanical failures.
