“Master of escapes” arrested in Spain after fleeing four prisons

Spanish police arrested 42-year-old Albanian national Taulant Toma, known as the “Master of Escapes,” in Tarragona, Spain.

Toma had escaped from four prisons, three in Italy and one in Belgium. His most recent escape occurred in 2025 from a maximum-security prison in Milan.

Investigators believe he had been living in Spain since January. He was reportedly carrying false identification documents when arrested.

Toma now faces extradition to Italy, where he is expected to serve a lengthy prison sentence for multiple offenses, including his prison escapes.

His previous escapes included climbing over a prison wall in Belgium using a human pyramid and breaking through bars before escaping from the Milan facility.
