Mexican Senate defends “national sovereignty” and supports Sheinbaum against threats from the US

Mexico City.- The president of the Mexican Senate, Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, extended her support this Sunday to the “responsible foreign policy, based on respect and cooperation between countries”, guided by the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, after the US president, Donald Trump, assured that he will “start attacking by land” the Mexican cartels. “Mexico has a nation project that vindicates the sovereignty of the peoples and their self-determination to define their destiny,” Castillo highlighted in a video posted on his social media. In that sense, he reiterated that the Senate will continue “working energetically in favor of national sovereignty and in defense of the homeland.” In addition, he embraced the Estrada Doctrine, the cornerstone of foreign policy in Mexico, which responds to “non-intervention” and the right to “self-determination of peoples”, concepts included in article 89 of the Mexican Constitution.

“Our country has demonstrated throughout history its capacity for leadership in international diplomatic matters. The Estrada Doctrine, coming from one of the most important diplomats of our country from the last century,” highlighted the congresswoman, who referred to the author of this set of principles, the former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Genaro Estrada (1887-1937). He also defended the precepts of international law, which state “that there must be dialogue for the resolution of conflicts.” And he endorsed his support for Sheinbaum and the Mexican Government’s stance of always considering “cooperation” and “never subordination, and even less intervention.” This response from the president of the Upper House comes after the head of the Executive indicated that there will be “coordination” with the U.S., but that “the independence and sovereignty of the homeland” are not up for negotiation following Trump’s threat to “start attacking on the ground” the Mexican cartels. The statements made by the U.S. president against Mexico were made after the United States military intervention in Venezuela on January 3, which culminated in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were later transferred to New York, where they face trial for drug trafficking, among other crimes. Therefore, Castillo emphasized in his message that Sheinbaum has 70% approval from the Mexican population and that she obtained the head of the Executive power through the ballot box “with 36 million votes, which no president of the Republic had ever had in this country in history.”
