Lisbon.- A total of 2,808 firefighters are battling 35 wildfires this Wednesday in the north and center of Portugal, where the largest is taking place in the Arouca area, about 60 kilometers south of Porto, and there are some near the border with Spain, next to Galicia and Extremadura.
In the Arouca fire, at 07:30 local time (06:30 GMT) there were 776 personnel, 258 land vehicles and one aerial resource deployed, according to data from the Portuguese National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
This fire was the one that most worried the Portuguese authorities yesterday, as it is developing in an area where adult eucalyptus is abundant, which facilitates its spread.
Near the border with Spain, the fire in Ponte da Barca, close to Galicia, remains active, with 362 firefighters and 125 land vehicles.
They are controlled, but still with personnel on the ground, the two fires near the border with Extremadura, the one in Penamacor and the one in Nisa, where a total of 395 firefighters and 529 vehicles are stationed.
For this Wednesday and the coming days, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has a very high and maximum forest fire alert for the center and north of the Iberian country, except for some parts of the coast.
