Dr. Khadiga Metwally, the mother of convicted terrorist Abdulrahman El-Bahnasawy, is running for an educational trustee position on the Halton District School Board in Milton, Ontario, according to the Toronto Sun.
Metwally said in 2019 that her son had been “manipulated by the FBI” with help from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and claimed the charges against him were fabricated. El-Bahnasawy pleaded guilty to seven terrorism charges related to a plot to carry out mass attacks in New York intended to “create the next 9/11.”
El-Bahnasawy was sentenced in March 2019 to 40 years in federal prison after admitting his role in a plot to attack the New York City subway and Times Square with explosives. U.S. authorities said he obtained bomb-making materials and rented a cabin near the city to build explosive devices, while one of his alleged accomplices was an undercover FBI agent.
In December 2020, El-Bahnasawy also attacked two prison officers, leaving one with the loss of an eye. He was subsequently transferred permanently to the maximum-security ADX Florence prison in Colorado, where authorities have described him as an “extreme danger.”
