New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Haitian immigrants “reckless and inhumane” and warned of the consequences for the state.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Hochul reiterated her opposition to ending TPS for Haitians and urged the federal government to reverse the decision.
The Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of Haiti’s TPS in November 2025. Following a series of legal challenges and a Supreme Court ruling in late June 2026, a federal judge formally confirmed the end of the protection on August 5, leaving hundreds of thousands of Haitians without TPS.
