Consul suggests the JCE identify weaknesses to increase votes from Dominicans abroad

NEW YORK.– The Dominican consul in New York, Jesús Vásquez Martínez, suggested that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) identify the weaknesses affecting the participation of Dominicans abroad, instead of proposing the elimination of the vote due to abstention levels.

Vásquez Martínez considered it necessary to review the conditions under which the electoral process is carried out abroad and to determine what is causing a portion of the diaspora not to go to the polls.

The official stated that, once those difficulties are identified, solutions must be sought to facilitate and motivate the participation of Dominicans residing abroad.

His position joins that of overseas deputy Cirilo Moronta, who described eliminating the overseas vote as “madness” and maintained that abstention also exists in the Dominican Republic.
