President of Peru decrees state of emergency in Lima for thirty days against crime
Lima.- The interim president of Peru, José Jerí, decreed this Wednesday a state of emergency in Lima, the country’s capital, and in the neighboring port province of Callao, starting at midnight today and for a period of thirty days, to fight against organized crime.
In a message to the nation, broadcast via television and social media, Jeri said that “crime has grown disproportionately” and has caused immense pain to thousands of families and has harmed the national economy.
However, the president added that “today we begin to change history” and that the fight against organized crime will allow his country to “regain peace and tranquility”.
“Wars are won with actions and not with words,” Jeri affirmed without giving further details of the measures contained in the state of emergency declared by his Government.
