Santiago de Chile, July 30 (EFE).- Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) reported that a preventive evacuation began in Easter Island due to the tsunami alert issued after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake recorded in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. According to the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA), Easter Island, located 3,700 kilometers from the Chilean mainland coast, would be the first national territory to receive the impact of the waves generated by the earthquake, with an estimated arrival around 11:25 local time (09:25 GMT – 16:25 GMT). The presidential delegate of Easter Island, Sergio Tepano, informed local media that street closures and the suspension of some public services were implemented on evacuation routes, and that preventive actions are being carried out with the support of security agencies and authorities.
Following the earthquake, Chilean authorities activated prevention protocols throughout the country, extending the tsunami alert from the Arica and Parinacota region in the north to the Los Lagos Region in the south-central area. A state of precaution was established for the Aysén, Magallanes regions, and the Chilean Antarctic territory.
