The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, pointed out this Thursday that in her meeting with the US Under Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, the will to “seek the best bilateral relationship” was reaffirmed amid the tension caused by the protests following the raids on migrants, which she reiterated her rejection of because they persecute people who “work honestly” in the US.
“On migration issues, we talked about defending our migrant brothers and sisters, that we did not agree with the use of raids to detain people who work honestly in the United States. That this was going to harm not only the people, but also the economy of the United States,” the president emphasized during her morning press conference.
The Mexican ruler pointed out that during the meeting they discussed various topics, including security, where her cabinet showed her the results obtained in the first months of her Administration.
“It was really more of a courtesy meeting. He came to introduce himself in his new role in the State Department of President (Donald) Trump’s government and, as he said, to seek the best relationship between Mexico and the United States,” he said about the meeting with Landau, with whom he also discussed the upcoming visit of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
He also highlighted that in the meeting, which was also attended by the new United States ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, they discussed the importance of strengthening the relationship between both countries.

The meeting occurs amidst the tension between Mexico and the United States due to recent accusations from the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, who accused Sheinbaum of inciting the protests in Los Angeles, a city with the largest Mexican community abroad, something rejected as “absolutely” false by the president.
Furthermore, the meeting took place during negotiations over the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum by the United States, in which Mexico has sought to be exempt from these levies.
