Mexico City.- Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated this Friday that she feels “calm” and “strong” despite the accusations from the United States against the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, and nine other officials, as well as in the case of the alleged presence of US agents in the state of Chihuahua in operations against drug trafficking.
“The president is strong, solid and very confident for one reason: ‘We will never separate ourselves from the people of Mexico and we will always defend sovereignty above all else,'” the president assured in her press conference held at the Centro Cultural del México Contemporáneo in the Mexican capital.
He also insisted that a relationship of “cooperation and coordination” would be maintained with the U.S., but not one of subordination, which is why, he added, “the case of Chihuahua and Sinaloa is being handled by the Prosecutor’s Office.”
“There are instances and institutions in which we believe they are handling these cases and they have to report,” highlighted the head of the Executive.
The Prosecutor’s Office will review the complaints from the US.
In that sense, he reiterated that the Prosecutor’s Office will be in charge of analyzing the accusation by the U.S. Department of Justice against Rocha Moya, the mayor of Culiacán, Juan de Dios Gámez Mendívil, and eight other officials for drug trafficking and weapons possession.
“(The Attorney General’s Office) is the competent authority, what happened, what evidence is there and if not, request the necessary evidence, it’s that simple: everyone is innocent until proven guilty, that’s how justice works in Mexico,” he highlighted.
Therefore, he stated, “it must be proven within our legal framework the responsibility of one person or another, for anyone, a public servant or a Mexican man or woman.”
Sheinbaum also denied being “between a rock and a hard place,” as indicated by the opposition parties, in the case of Rocha Moya, who, in addition to belonging to the official party of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), was a politician close to the Government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
The response from the president comes amid a political earthquake with the northern neighbor, in which attention is focused on the US accusation against officials for drug trafficking and alleged links with the Sinaloa Cartel.
In addition to the controversy due to the alleged presence, and subsequent death, of two supposed U.S. agents in the state of Chihuahua, bordering the United States, for an operation against drug trafficking.
