Authorities warn that the heat wave is expected to continue throughout next week
Tokyo.- The city of Yangsan, in the southeast of South Korea, broke the record for maximum temperature recorded in the Asian country this Sunday with 42.5 degrees Celsius, amidst a heat wave that has forced authorities to declare a weather alert.
The 42.5 degrees Celsius recorded in Yangsan by the South Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) represent the highest mark since modern meteorological observations began in 1904, following five consecutive days with the thermometer exceeding 40 degrees.
The milestone occurred amidst a high-temperature episode that is sweeping the entire territory, and which this Sunday led the Government to declare the second level of alert in the disaster response center, according to the office of Prime Minister Han Seong-sook, on the social network X.
The decision was adopted due to “the intensification of the heat wave and concern over the damage caused by the drought in some regions,” the statement indicated.
Han had already urged citizens last Friday to “avoid outdoor activities as much as possible during midday hours” and to remain alert to the “tendency to relax vigilance a little.”
