Spain will deploy military units to support police in Ceuta after hundreds of migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave from Morocco, overwhelming local security forces. The Spanish government said the Armed Forces will assist the Civil Guard in maintaining security in the city.
Authorities said around 1,500 migrants had entered Ceuta in recent days, creating what local officials described as a humanitarian emergency. A Spanish government spokeswoman confirmed that nine bodies had been recovered. Many of those attempting to reach Ceuta crossed by swimming around the border fence.
The surge in arrivals prompted Italy to call for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen open-border zone, while representatives of Spain’s Civil Guard described the situation as chaotic and said the border had “totally collapsed.”
