The U.S. congratulates José Antonio Kast and looks forward to cooperation on migration and trade

Washington.- New York.- The United States Government extended its congratulations to the President-elect of Chile, José Antonio Kast, after his victory in the presidential elections of that country, and expressed its expectation that under his administration priority will be given to the fight against irregular immigration and the strengthening of trade ties between both nations. 

In an official statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized Washington’s willingness to work jointly with the new Chilean administration in areas of mutual interest. “We trust that, under your leadership, Chile will promote shared priorities, such as strengthening public security, controlling illegal immigration, and revitalizing our trade relationship,” Rubio indicated. 

The United States’ congratulations come as Kast prepares to assume the presidency after obtaining around 58% of the votes against his rival, the left-wing candidate Jeannette Jara, in an electoral process marked by a strong debate on security, migration and economy. US authorities highlighted in their message the importance of promoting dynamic bilateral trade and of jointly addressing the challenges posed by unauthorized migration flows, a topic that has been central to the agenda of both countries. With this statement, Washington reaffirms its interest in consolidating cooperation with Chile in strategic matters and in fostering a framework of collaboration that ranges from border security to the promotion of investments and trade.
