U.S. President Donald Trump proposed Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz be renamed the “Trump Strait,” arguing that the strategic waterway is now under U.S. control.
“Now that it is under American control, should we change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the Trump Strait?” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump has increasingly made expansionist statements during his second term, previously raising the possibility of changes involving territories and strategic locations including Greenland, the Panama Canal, Canada and Venezuela.
Last week, Trump also said the strategically important waterway, which separates the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman, could become U.S. territory. On Tuesday, he reinforced the idea by posting an image on Truth Social showing a map of the strait labeled “NEW U.S. Territory”, accompanied by a blue, red and white banner with stars.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage and has become a central point in the conflict between the United States and Iran.
