U.S. President Donald Trump said he will sign an executive order to rename artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence,” or “SI,” in U.S. government documents.
Trump made the announcement while presenting a new website designed to provide access to federal services and information through artificial intelligence. He said the technology should be referred to as “Super Intelligence” because, in his view, it represents a form of “extreme” and “superior” intelligence.
“This is not ordinary intelligence; this is extreme intelligence,” Trump said, adding that the word “super” was the simplest and best choice.
Trump also said he discussed the proposed name change with Chinese President Xi Jinping during Xi’s recent visit to the United States and claimed that the Chinese leader liked the idea.
The announcement comes after Trump previously praised the development of artificial intelligence in the United States during his address to the United Nations General Assembly, saying the country should promote the technology rather than slow its development.
